The Mitta Mitta river runs year round, collecting water from the Victorian Alps and delivering it to the sea thousands of kilometres away via the Murray River. This depicts the catchment of the wild Mitta Mitta river, until it is stopped by Dartmouth Dam. Contour lines of the surrounding Victorian Alps give a hint of context.
I’ve watched the Mitta Mitta river over a full annual cycle, a few before it becomes part of Lake Dartmouth. We saw floods, fires, wonderful crystal clear water and deep black sludge. So I became curious about where all this water running past my door came from – and here is one result…
This map was made using ASTER GDEM v3 topography and surface hydrographic data from Geoscience Australia. Catchment delineation and rendering performed entirely in QGIS (https://qqis.org).
